EUGENE BULLARD 2014 MOONBEAM GOLD MEDAL WINNER

"Celebrating Youthful Curiosity, Discovery and Learning through Books and Reading"

Jenkins Group is proud to announce the winners of the 2014 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards. Launched in 2007, the awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to celebrate children’s books and life-long reading.

Congratulations to all the winners! This year's Moonbeam Awards medal ceremony will be held in conjunction with the 5th annual Traverse City Children’s Book Festival, on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

GOLD: Eugene Bullard: World’s First Black Fighter Pilot, by Larry Greenly (NewSouth Books)

The Moonbeam Children's Book Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to celebrate children’s books and life-long reading.

Many of our award-winning books encourage children to be generous and compassionate, to stand up to bullies, and to believe in fulfilling their dreams. The diversity of the winning publishers proves that promoting childhood literacy knows no boundaries, as medal-winners came not only from long-established publishers and university presses, but from small presses, foundations, and self-published entrepreneurs.

There are 166 medalists in all, representing 37 U.S. States plus the District of Columbia; 5 Canadian provinces; and 7 other countries: Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Japan, Scotland, Singapore and Spain.

Creating books that inspire our children to read, to learn, and to dream is an extremely important task, and these awards were conceived to reward those efforts. Each year's entries are judged by expert panels of youth educators, librarians, booksellers, and book reviewers of all ages. Award recipients receive gold, silver and bronze medals and stickers depicting a mother and child reading and silhouetted by a full moon.

EUGENE BULLARD A FINALIST X3

Rotary Talk

The Rotary Breakfast Club heard me present a 20-minute talk on Thursday, 11 Sep 2014, about the life of Eugene Bullard and how he persevered throughout his life. The talk went very well, and I sold a number of copies of my book. The owner of Jimmy's Cafe on Jefferson made me an offer I couldn't refuse. His restaurant features framed pictures of famous Jimmys throughout history. Since Eugene Bullard's monkey mascot was named Jimmy, the owner wanted a picture of him and an image of the cover of my book. He offered my wife and me a free breakfast. How could I refuse? BTW, the breakfast was great. The next time I'm in the area, I'll take a look for "my" Jimmy. Give Jimmy's Cafe a try: Click here.
